Synopsis

Three years ago, Queen-Regent Isabelle Varren spoke the formula that was supposed to end it. Refusal severs. The body forgets. She built her reign, her certainty, and her solitude on that single law. But the moment she rides through the silver gates of Vairn to negotiate a treaty that could save her kingdom or break it, the warmth returns beneath her gloves, low and steady and impossible. The man on the other side of the table is Cal Doren, sovereign of the rival North, who greets her with no retinue, no bow, and eyes that refuse to meet hers. Every word between them is measured in years, garrisons, and ground that cannot be conceded. Yet the bond she severed has not forgotten him. As the talks tighten and each concession costs more than the last, Isabelle must decide whether the choice that defined her was wisdom or simply fear in a crown. Some refusals don't sever. They wait. A slow-burning fantasy of power, restraint, and the pull two rulers cannot afford to feel.
