Chapter 3

The thing Mrs. Aldercott had said over the silver was not, strictly, a sentence in Verity's direction. It had come out as one of those housekeeperly notations that follow upon the morning post — His lordship will be at his desk below stairs until three, miss. A quiet day for you — and it had been delivered to the window, at the rain, as one woman tells another a fact she does not wish to be seen telling.

Verity had inclined her head over her cup. She had not answered. There was nothing to be told that had not already been told.

By eleven she had her plan. By half past she had her key.

The second housemaid was called Bessie. She was nineteen and still flinched when a door closed too hard, and she was folding sheets that had been pressed too damp on the back stair when Verity came up to her.

"Mrs. Aldercott is to send peat to my room before three, but I should not like to trouble her in the kitchens. There is a draft at the chimney piece — I think a tile loose. I had hoped to look behind the panelling. Only the back of the house is in service corridors."

Bessie looked up. Thinking arrived on the girl's face slowly, as a guest who was not sure of his welcome.

"The corridors, miss?"

"If there is a master key for the back passages. I shall not need it long. I should hate his lordship to find me cold when he asks how I slept."

It was not strictly true; he had not asked her since the first morning. But it had the shape of truth — the shape that a girl who had not slept warm in her own bed for six years would recognize and forgive. Bessie put down the sheet, unhooked a small flat key from a nail behind the door of the press, and gave it to Verity with both hands, as one gives a thing one is uncertain of.

"Mrs. Aldercott does not always —"

"I shall return it within the hour."

"Yes, miss."

Mrs. Aldercott would have to be told, and the girl left it unsaid. The telling had been done already, in the angle of Mrs. Aldercott's head at breakfast — this errand was permitted.

Or so Verity wished, for the half hour it took her to reach the second turning in the back passage, to believe.

The back passages were narrower than the front by a foot and a half, and unlit. The light came over the back-stair window and went out twelve yards along, at the first turning. After the turning she walked with her left hand against the plaster, in the way her host walked through any room — not on purpose; it had chosen itself.

Three doors gave off the passage on the kitchen side. She passed them without trying their handles. The fourth door was on the other side and was bigger and had a threshold worn into a hollow by feet. The padlock she had measured from the corridor side was on the corridor side. From here the door had only an iron bolt thrown across into a staple. The bolt stood proud of its seat. It had failed of its bed by half an inch.

The gap she could not widen. The gap she could put her eye to.

The corridor beyond was lit by a window at the far end — afternoon light, dim and gray, thin enough that the dust on the floor lay in it like cloth. The corridor ran some twelve paces. On the second board from her, in the dust, was the print of a shoe.

A woman's shoe. A narrow last, smaller than her own. The heel had been set down with the easy weight of a person who knew the boards beneath the dust and was not afraid of them. The print was three days old at the most. Possibly an afternoon.

A second print began six inches from the first, going towards the further window.

She made a list of it inside her head, in the way her father had taught her to make lists at inquests. What is here: the right foot, narrow last, no metal heel. What is not here: a corresponding man. What should be here, and is missing: she could not see far enough to tell.

Her hand went to the head of the bolt and felt the iron. It was cold but not the cold of long disuse. Iron in a corridor never traveled by takes the chill of stone and never gives it up. This iron had been touched within the day.

She closed the gap and went back the way she had come.

She would not have marked the hour at all, but for coming up out of the back stair into the main corridor of the bedroom floor and finding it already darker than when she had left it. There was always, in November, a quarter of an hour between the giving up of the windows and the lighting of the wicks. The housekeepers called it the hour of the candle. The lamps stood unlit. The corridor went fifteen yards before her and gave nothing back at the far end but its own length.

She walked it at her own pace. She was not afraid. She was thinking, and the thinking was that the print in the dust was the print of a woman at her ease. The heel had been set with the weight of a woman walking in a corridor she knew.

She had nearly reached her own door when her back met something that was not the wall.

It was not the wall because the wall did not breathe.

No cry came. She held still. The body behind her had been backed into; it had been waiting. It had been waiting in the corridor on the side away from the failing window, where dark gathered first.

A hand came up between her shoulder blade and her throat. Unhurried. A hand that knew, before it touched, the exact height of her throat — the angle, the distance from her chin. The pad of the thumb found the place under the jaw where the artery lay closest to the skin, and stayed there. The hand did not close. It rested.

No pipe tobacco. No horse. The wool of his sleeve, very near her ear, smelt of sandalwood and the dry brightness of bergamot peel, and beneath both, the stillness of paper that meant a man who had been at a desk all morning.

Whose hand it was needed no telling. That was the first thing she kept to herself.

The second hand came up the front of her — not low, not in any place a hand would not be permitted on a clothed woman who was being recognized. It found the line of her jaw first. The fingers walked the jaw to her chin and held there as a music master holds a wrist, to feel the angle and let it go. They moved up. They found the corner of her mouth. They paused there. They did not move past the corner of her mouth.

He was reading her.

She held her breath until she remembered that the breath was one of the things being read, and let it out. He listened to her let it out. He stayed where he was.

"Miss Lane."

His voice came at the low, even pitch a man keeps for the easily startled.

"My lord."

"Give me your left hand."

She gave it.

He took it without looking — he could not look — and turned it palm up. His fingers passed over the heel of her palm, over the soft place under the thumb, and stopped at the thin pale line that ran from the base of the third finger to the wrist. He traced it. He traced it again, more slowly, as if confirming the path.

"How old."

"I was nine."

"Glass."

"Glass."

"In your father's office."

She had not told him her father had an office. She had told him only that her father had been a solicitor and had died. The pause she made was no longer than the one Crispin himself had made the morning before, over the word body. He let her have it.

"In his office."

"You have shown it to no one in this house."

"No."

"You have shown it to no one in two years."

That was not a question, and she gave it no answer.

The thumb on her throat lifted by a hair and settled differently. Not harder. With more knowledge. The hand that held her left hand kept the scar between two fingers, as a man keeps the place of a book he means to come back to.

Then the soft click of his other hand — the one not on her throat, not on her palm — sounded as it moved up to his own face. The dark spectacles came off. They were folded once at the bridge. The small brush of wool sounded as he tucked them into the breast of his coat.

He turned his face to her. The face was nearer than she had thought — six inches, no more. The eyes were not the eyes she had seen at breakfast. The pale skin of the lid was the same. The lashes were the same. The eyes themselves had gone the color of milk into which one drop of blue ink had been let fall and stirred. They did not move. They had no need. They were aimed at the place her face had to be, because his ear had it.

She did not look away. To have looked away would have been a thing to be read, and she had not yet decided how much of herself she was prepared to have read.

"Miss Lane."

"My lord."

"Your pulse went wrong when you gave the housekeeper your name. It went wrong the second time it left your mouth, not the first. The first time it was only a name. The second time it was a name you had been saying for a length of time I have not yet measured. Two years, possibly. Possibly more."

She did not speak.

"It went wrong when I asked at breakfast how you had slept and you said wonderfully. The word was not the wrong word. The pause before the word was the wrong pause. I had heard that pause once before, between Pickering and the gravel. The cabman gave it on your behalf when I asked at what hour you had taken the train."

He had asked the cabman that, then. The fact arrived new.

"It is going wrong now. It has been going wrong since you turned out of the back stair. You did not pass through the kitchens on your way up. The kitchens smell of mutton, and you do not."

He waited. The thumb against her throat felt every beat she did not give him permission to give.

"I should like," he said, in the same voice, "to know your name. Your real one. I should like to know it before someone in this house mistakes you for the woman you are not, and kills you on her account."

The word her he did not gloss.

He let the hand at her palm slide away. He let the hand at her throat slide away — slowly, the way a man takes a hand from a horse he intends to leave calm. The dark spectacles came back. Unfolded once at the bridge. The small brush of wool as he set them on his nose.

"You have until morning."

He did not turn. He went past her, on her right side, by the wall against which her own hand still rested. His sleeve stayed clear of hers. His shoes were quiet on the carpet. At the head of the stairs the sound thinned to nothing. The stairs themselves gave back no footfall at all.

She did not move.

Her left hand had stayed open in the air at the place he had let it go. She closed it. She brought it to her own throat and laid the pad of her own thumb where his thumb had been. The pulse under her thumb was not the pulse of a woman who had been frightened. It was the pulse of a woman who had been seen.

She had not been seen since her father had died.

The corridor was darker now than when she had come into it. A long way off through the house, the housemaid Grace was going from sconce to sconce with the spill — the small flare and catch of each wick traveling towards her by degrees, a lit room and then another lit room, none of them yet this one.

She spoke once, very low, into the corridor. It would not answer; she was not asking it.

"Someone in this house would kill me."

She said it without rising inflection, as one says aloud a fact one had refused on first being shown the proof, and now believed.

By morning, she thought, she would have to decide what she was prepared to give him.

By the time she reached her own door she understood that the deciding had already been done.
